Thanks for helping Murphy's Kids!

Friends,

Since coming to the Triad in January of 1992, we have worked with a lot of great national organizations helping deserving children with chronic or life-threatening illness. With your help, we donated tens of thousands of dollars to great organizations like Make-A-Wish.

Years ago, we had the idea to start our own 501 (c) charity that catered to local children and families in need. That year, Murphy’s Kids was born.

Since 2001, Murphy’s Kids has raised over a half million dollars for local children and their families, as well as local organizations.

The money is raised from our great events, including Annual Murphy’s Kids Klassic Golf Tournament, the Celebrity Samurai Cookoff, Tri-cows Kids Triathlon, sales of our Best Of Murphy CD’s, Auctions and from donations from generous 1075 KZL listeners across the Triad.

As wonderful as raising the money is, I want to share with you something even more important-what we’ve done with the raised money! Every Christmas since 2002, Murphy’s Kids has asked 1075 KZL listeners to nominate a local family in need. After a family is chosen, we provide the family with not only presents for the children, but money for bills and a much needed vacation for the whole family to enjoy.

Unfortunately, tragedies in the Triad are inevitable and Murphy’s Kids receives many letters explaining how a local family has been affected by an unexpected disaster. Murphy’s Kids has helped pay funeral costs and hospital bills for children and their parents when tragedy strikes and a family is pressed for money in the difficult time. We’ve also given money to families who have lost their house after a fire or a family member became ill and the mortgage took a backseat in their lives.

When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Murphy’s Kids "adopted" A New Orleans family and helped them create a life here in the Triad.

Murphy’s Kids helped the family get a home, food, clothing, and even school tuition for their kids! Murphy’s Kids also stepped in to help one Gulf Coast family after their tragic loss during Katrina. Hardy Jackson lost his wife and the mother of his children after a 20 foot wave crashed into their Biloxi, Mississippi home. Hardy’s heart-wrenching story was broadcast on several national news networks. One year later, Murphy’s Kids learned that Hardy was still struggling financially, without a home and without the funds to hold a memorial service for his late wife. Murphy’s Kids flew Hardy and his family back to Biloxi and provided the funds needed to finally give Hardy’s wife the memorial service she deserved. 1075 KZL listeners were so touched by Hardy’s story, funds poured in, giving Murphy’s Kids enough money to help Hardy and his family out financially!

One of the best things about being a part of Murphy’s Kids is seeing the positive outcome of our donations. For the last two years, Murphy’s Kids paid the $16,000 tab for families with autistic children who needed a guide dog. Two Triad boys now have their trained guide dogs from Heritage Specialty Dogs. Last year, Murphy’s Kids received an email about a special little girl who was wheelchair bound and who’s caretaker had to push her down their long driveway in all sorts of weather to catch the bus. Murphy’s Kids found some Eagle Scouts looking to do a project for the community and paid the for the scouts’ materials so they could build the little girl a covered ramp to the bus stop. Earlier this year, Murphy’s Kids heard of some students at Greensboro’s Gillespie Elementary that couldn’t afford to go on their field trip to the beach. Some of the students had never even seen the ocean before! So, Murphy’s Kids made sure that all the students in the class were able to go on that beach field trip! Nothing felt better than getting postcards for those kids from the beach!

As a non profit organization, Murphy’s Kids understands how much hard work goes into fund raising efforts. Because we are blessed to have our radio show to get the word out about our events, we are happy to help out other organizations with their need for donations as well.

Murphy’s Kids has helped raise money for the Boys and Girls Club Scholarship fund, the Rockingham County Red Cross, the Police Benevolent Fund for fallen Winston Salem Sergeant Howard Plouff, the Caswell County Department of Social Services, Brenner Children’s Hospital, and the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make Murphy’s Kids what it is today.
Hundreds of Triad residents in need have been helped because of your generosity. Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming fundraising events, like the sales of the new best of Murphy in the Morning CD!
